The Magpies have struggled to replicate those heroics in 2023-24, leading to suggestions that a change in the dugout could be made.

Former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United boss Mourinho is currently out of work after severing ties with Serie A side Roma. He has seen a return to England speculated on, and Newcastle could provide the funds and ambition that allow the charismatic Portuguese to thrive in the Premier League once more.

Newcastle have been told to consider such a move, with prominent pundit Richard Keys saying of the need for something new on Tyneside: “What’s happened to the Geordie revolution? There are no guarantees of a trophy in football - unless you employ him.”

Mourinho has delivered trophies in just about every managerial position that he has filled. Questions have been asked of whether he is still the force he once was, at 61 years of age, but there can never be any doubting his enthusiasm for the game and Newcastle are without major silverware since 1955.
