Will there be series four & five of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’? Red Dragons director explains why ‘logic’ points to Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney extending documentary series after Emmy success

The popular documentary series recently won five Emmy Awards on the back of a second season that covered the Red Dragons’ record-breaking promotion back into the Football League. A third series has been confirmed for 2024, with results on the field set to dictate how much further the FX production can go.

Wrexham director Harvey, who works closely with Reynolds and McElhenney in North Wales, has told The Athletic when asked if fans can expect a fourth and fifth instalment of the prize-winning show: “This isn’t my area of expertise, but logic says that if things are successful then they tend to continue. The show is a success because it is genuine and authentic. More importantly, it is relatable — relatable to the majority of people watching it in a way they can pick things in their world that they recognise through the show. That, to me, is why Welcome To Wrexham has been such a success. The producers and everyone involved deserve huge credit.”

The Red Dragons do not receive a direct fee from starring on ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, but the show offers a window to the world and continues to benefit the club financially. Harvey added: “We’ve always described Welcome To Wrexham as the club’s biggest commercial asset. The club’s biggest asset is the fanbase and everything that goes on locally in Wrexham. That will always remain the case. Nothing is bigger than the football club. But what the show does is provide the club with a tremendous marketing platform. Such is the popularity of the club, the community and the story that Welcome To Wrexham has been able to take that out of North Wales to the world. The documentary elevates us to a level alongside some of the biggest clubs in the world. The evidence of that came last summer with all the club’s commercial deals.”

The third season of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ could cover another promotion, with Phil Parkinson overseeing a rise towards the top of the League Two table – with the most ambitious of outfits determined to wrap up a top-three finish.
