Ronald Araujo insists he has no plans to leave Barcelona as defender puts transfer speculation to bed

Araujo has firmly shut down rumours linking him with a move away from the Catalan club, declaring his intention to remain with La Liga's champions. The defender has a contract until 2031, but reports had surfaced about a release clause in his deal that could have allowed him to exit early in the summer window for around €65 million (£54.5m/$74m). However, the Uruguayan defender has made it clear that Barcelona remains his home.

Speaking to reporters, Araujo said: "I’m happy with all the titles we won this season. Personally, I don’t think it was a great season, especially because of the injury that kept me out for a long time, but I’m happy because I’ve got three titles under my belt, and I’m happy to be here. I assure my continuity, I have a contract until 2031."

The 2024-25 campaign was far from ideal for Araujo, who struggled with fitness issues following surgery after the Copa America. His long absence from the pitch saw others step into the spotlight, most notably Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez, who often took up starting roles in his stead. Despite recovering and returning to action, Araujo never fully regained the commanding form he once displayed in the heart of Barca’s defence. His performances drew criticism, especially following the club’s elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Inter, where he was perceived to have underperformed.

“I’m very mature and aware of what I’m capable of," he told reporters. "I’ve been very calm about it. I’m in good spirits and also physically. If I’m healthy, I can compete with anyone. I don’t listen to criticism. Maybe my family listens to it a little more, but I don’t pay attention to what people say.

“Being out of action for so long bothered me a bit. I always want to play. When you don’t play, maybe you lose a little confidence, but that’s part of your career. I’m at one of the best clubs in the world. I’m one of the team’s captains. There are many years left, and good things are coming. The coach loves me, and the fans love me.”

Araujo faces tough competition for minutes in the upcoming season. Alongside Cubarsi and Martinez, the Uruguayan will also contend with Eric Garcia and Andreas Christensen for a place in Hansi Flick’s defensive plans. Although Barcelona are reportedly open to selling Christensen, the Denmark international has not shown any inclination to leave.

With rumours linking him to European giants like Juventus, Manchester United and Bayern Munich now put to rest, Araujo’s focus will shift to rediscovering his top form. After completing a domestic double with Barcelona, the defender will now shift his focus to international commitments with Uruguay, as the South American nation will face Paraguay and Venezuela on June 5 and 10 in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers.
