Revealed: Man Utd set to lose significant portion of future Mason Greenwood profits after including bizarre clause in new Marseille signing's loan move to Getafe

The one-cap England international left Old Trafford for Spain in September 2023. He enjoyed a productive stint in La Liga, being named Getafe’s Player of the Season, and attracted interest from across Europe heading into another transfer window.

A permanent switch to Marseille has been completed, with the talented forward taking on another new challenge in France. That move was worth around £27 million ($35m) – with United ensuring that a sell-on clause was included in the terms, alongside a potential buy-back option.

It has, however, been revealed by The Athletic that Getafe have landed a share of Greenwood’s latest fee worth over £5m. That is because they are entitled to 20 per cent of whatever United make from deals involving a product of their famed academy system.

That will remain the case whenever the time comes for Greenwood to move on again, with Marseille – who have faced opposition from some of their own supporters to a big-money signing – considered to be another stepping stone to bigger and better things for the 22-year-old winger.
