    WHAT HAPPENED?

Real Madrid have stepped up their interest in Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Hugo Larsson. According to Marca, the club have sent scouts multiple times over the 2024-25 season to watch the midfielder in action, and he could be a potential addition in the summer as Xabi Alonso looks to revamp the squad.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

With Toni Kroos retiring last season and Modric not receiving a contract extension, Real Madrid appear light on midfield options. With Alonso set to take over from Carlo Ancelotti, the new manager has reportedly requested reinforcements in the middle of the park. Madrid have long admired the 20-year-old and he could prove to be a key addition to the squad, having played 43 games for Eintracht Frankfurt this season, scoring six goals across all competitions.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The transfer fee Frankfurt paid to Malmo for Larsson was the highest received in the Swedish Allsvenskan, at least until last season. The Bundesliga club splashed out €9 million in doing that deal, although transfers involving the likes of Lucas Bergvall, Bazoumana Toure and Sebastian Nanasi have since surpassed that figure.

WHAT NEXT FOR MADRID AND LARSSON?

Madrid welcome Real Sociedad to the Bernabeu on the last matchday of the season and it's set to be a farewell game for club legend Modric, who will be leaving in the summer. Larsson, meanwhile, ended his 2024-25 campaign on May 18 and he will await developments as Madrid face stiff competition from Premier League sides for the midfielder, including Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.
