‘Proud of you’ - Antonela Roccuzzo posts emotional Lionel Messi message as Argentine GOAT hints at end to record-shattering international career

Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi earned cap 194 for Argentina when facing Venezuela in a 2026 World Cup qualifier. He took his historic tally of goals for the Albiceleste to 114 when bagging a brace in a 3-0 win.

Ahead of that contest, Messi admitted that it was likely to be his last competitive outing on home soil. The 38-year-old will not form part of Lionel Scaloni’s plans for a trip to Ecuador on Tuesday.

Messi is yet to decide whether he will grace another World Cup next summer, with Argentina ready to defend their global title in the United States, Canada and Mexico. He said: “I haven’t made a decision yet about the World Cup. Match by match, I’ll finish the season, then have preseason, and in six months, I’ll see how I feel. Hopefully I can finish this MLS season strong, have a good preseason in 2026, and then make a decision.”

Whatever Messi decides, he has given his family and fans across the planet enough memories to last a lifetime. Antonela posted on social media after seeing her husband joined on the field at Estadio Monumental by their three sons: “Proud of you, every step you take and everything you built with love and effort. How lucky are we to be with you on this path!!! We love you @leomessi”

Messi is due to be back in action when representing Inter Miami in their clash with Charlotte FC on September 13. The Herons, who suffered Leagues Cup final heartache prior to seeing leading lights head off on international duty, are determined to savour MLS Cup glory in 2025.
