Familiar new director joins Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney as EFL loophole benefits prominent star of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary

Harvey has played a prominent role behind the scenes as the Red Dragons have enjoyed considerable success on and off the field in the wake of their Hollywood co-owners completing a stunning takeover deal in 2021. Harvey, who is a regular in the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series, will now join Reynolds, McElhenney and Humphrey Ker on the SToK Racecourse board.

The Mirror reports on how that promotion has been possible despite Harvey having previously been chief executive at two clubs that went into administration. He was associated with Bradford during their time in the Premier League, but financial struggles took hold by 2002. Harvey was also involved with Leeds during an era for the Whites that saw them stung with 10-point penalties and tumble as far as League One.

Harvey went on to become chief executive of the Football League, a role he filled for eight years from 2011, before starting a consultancy business. It was that move that led him to Wrexham. He has been able to join the board in North Wales as EFL rules state that people can only be prevented from taking such a step if “they have been a director of a football club which has suffered two insolvency events past June 2004 or separate football clubs which have each suffered an insolvency event past June 2004.”

Bradford’s period of administration came two years prior to their cut off point, allowing Wrexham to take advantage of an EFL loophole and push Harvey up the pecking order. Wrexham – who are looking to wrap up another promotion in 2023-24 - added the 53-year-old to their board on December 18, when details of that move were filed to Companies House.
