Mason Greenwood handed exceptional rating for Marseille Ligue 1 debut display against Brest by notoriously harsh critics L'Equipe

The one-cap England international is taking on a new challenge in France after severing ties with Manchester United. A £27 million ($35m) transfer has taken him away from Old Trafford and over to Stade Velodrome.

Greenwood enjoyed a productive loan spell at Getafe last season, winning their Player of the Year award, and is already making a positive impression in French football – having faced initial opposition to his move. The 22-year-old was among the goals in pre-season.

That form has been carried over into competitive fixtures, with a brace recorded on his competitive bow for Marseille. Greenwood opened the scoring in a 5-1 win over Brest, before then converting from the penalty spot. Those efforts earned him a first Man of the Match award.

L’Equipe, who are famed for handing out tough post-match assessments, liked what they saw from Greenwood. He has been handed a notable rating of eight, with only two players – Nantes goalkeeper Alban Lafont and Rennes forward Amine Gouiri - able to match that score on matchday one, as the Englishman made the French publication's team of the week.
