Managerial flop Wayne Rooney becomes ‘most sought-after property’ as Man Utd legend enjoys coaching break on the back of Birmingham & Plymouth nightmares

That is according to The Mirror, who claim that the ex-England international is a wanted man following his severing of ties with Championship side Plymouth. Rooney lasted just 25 games in charges of the Pilgrims and packed his bags with them rooted to the foot of the second-tier table.

A spell in Devon did little to rebuild Rooney’s reputation in coaching circles, with his last stint immediately prior to that spanning only 83 days at Birmingham – as Tom Brady and the Blues sank towards relegation into League One.

While questions are being asked of Rooney the boss, he remains of great interest as a pundit. It is in that department that he is said to have become much “sought-after”. The Mirror claims that “Match of the Day would happily snap him up in their new-look show for next season”, while “Sky also rate him highly” and TNT Sports have used him in the past.

Rooney has not ruled out a return to the dugout being made, admitting that he would consider U21 and backroom staff roles, but for now he is enjoying spending more quality time with wife Coleen and their four sons.
