Man Utd outcast Mason Greenwood set to make decision over Marseille transfer after fan backlash

Mason Greenwood has reportedly asked for time to mull over a transfer from Manchester United to Marseille after generating a fan backlash.

WHAT HAPPENED?
The 22-year-old forward is expected to sever ties with the Red Devils this summer after enjoying a productive loan spell at Getafe in 2023-24 that saw him win their Player of the Season award. Clubs from across Europe have been credited with interest.

Ligue 1 giants Marseille appeared to be leading that chase, with former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi green lighting a deal for his new employers in France, but disgruntled supporters have launched an online #GreenwoodNotWelcome campaign.

The major of Marseille has also spoken out against a move for a man that saw charges of attempted rape, assault and coercive and controlling behaviour dropped in February 2023. Benoit Payan has said, amid talk of a €32 million (£27m/$35m) deal being agreed: “Greenwood’s behaviour is unspeakable, unacceptable.”

WHAT NEXT?
According to Corriere dello Sport, Greenwood has “asked for time, shaken by the revolt staged by the Marseille ultras and by the diktat of the mayor of Marseille”. A decision is expected to be made shortly, with the one-cap England international eager to know where he stands heading into the 2024-25 campaign as pre-season begins.
