Man Utd extend Victor Lindelof contract until 2025 as Erik ten Hag favourite sees one-year option activated

According to The Athletic, United chose to activate the automatic one year extension to Lindelof's contract in order to prevent the defender from being able to talk to foreign clubs about a possible Bosman move in the summer. Erik ten Hag sees the 29-year-old as an important part of his defence at Old Trafford and retaining his services was deemed crucial.

United have struggled with injury problems in the heart of their defence and will feel they have had to rely on the services of 35-year-old Jonny Evans probably one too many times this campaign. With Raphael Varane likely to depart before next season, retaining Lindelof maintains some stability.

Lindelof has appeared more than any other United centre half this term - highlighting his importance in the United defence under Ten Hag. The Swede has played 18 times in all competitions this season.

Lindelof misses United's trip to the City Ground to face Nottingham Forest Saturday evening as the Red Devils look to make it two wins in a row after their 3-2 victory against Aston Villa. However, the defender will expect to play a key part for the rest of the season - especially after his contract extension.
