Man Utd set for a bargain! Red Devils closing in on cut-price transfer for Matthijs de Ligt with Bayern Munich willing to push deal through

United and Bayern are in talks over a cut-price deal for the defender worth around £34 million ($43m), inews reports. The Red Devils could get the deal over the line quickly now that Dan Ashworth is in place as the club's sporting director following confirmation of his move from Newcastle this week.

Dutch defender De Ligt is said to have agreed to join the Premier League side in a move that would see him reunite with Erik ten Hag, having worked with the coach during their time at Ajax. However, a section of Bayern fans are not happy about the likely transfer, as many signed a petition in an attempt to stop the centre-back from leaving.

De Ligt is one of six big names that the German giants have deemed sellable this summer as they plot an overhaul of their squad after finishing last season without a trophy. De Ligt, who joined from Juventus in 2022, started 16 of his 22 Bundesliga appearances as Bayern finished third in the table last season. He also featured six times in the Champions League.

The 24-year-old Netherlands international is currently competing at Euro 2024, though he has been an unused substitute in all four matches so far. United could have a deal in place to sign him by the time the competition in Germany comes to an end.
