  • WHAT HAPPENED?

McKenna is a key contender on a four-man shortlist that United have prepared in anticipation of potentially ending Ten Hag’s tenure following Saturday’s FA Cup final against Manchester City. As per reports, United have already initiated contact with representatives of their preferred managerial candidates. This preemptive move underscores the club’s intent to swiftly address the managerial situation if they decide to move on from Ten Hag. However, McKenna’s impressive credentials have also attracted interest from Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to The Times, McKenna's preference seems to be a return to United. The 37-year-old has strong ties to the Red Devils, having spent five formative years there before moving to Ipswich Town. During his tenure at United, he initially worked with the under-18s before being promoted to the first team by Jose Mourinho. McKenna continued in this role under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick before leaving the club in 2021.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Despite the mounting speculation, United have maintained that no final decision regarding Ten Hag’s future will be made based on the outcome of Saturday’s match. However, the odds appear to be stacking against Ten Hag, with increasing indications that he may be on his way out. If sacked, Ten Hag would be entitled to a substantial compensation package, the exact amount of which will hinge on whether United secures Europa League qualification by winning the FA Cup final.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MCKENNA?

For McKenna, a return to Old Trafford would be a realisation of a boyhood dream. His previous stint at the club left a lasting impression, and his successful management of Ipswich Town, leading them to Premier League promotion, has only enhanced his reputation. This background makes him a particularly appealing candidate for United, who are looking to reinvigorate their squad with fresh ideas after an underwhelming spell under Ten Hag.
