Jose Mourinho & Steven Gerrard ‘fit the bill’ for Rangers but transfer ‘need’ highlighted by Ibrox legend amid links to ‘Special One’ & returning Liverpool legend

The Gers find themselves in the market for a new permanent boss. Philippe Clement was relieved of his duties in February. Former club captain Barry Ferguson has been overseeing first-team affairs on an interim basis since then.

Old Firm rivals Celtic are closing in on another Scottish Premiership title, with there clearly work for Rangers to do heading forward. Liverpool legend Gerrard was the last man to deliver a domestic crown to the blue half of Glasgow in 2020-21. He is out of work after leaving Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq.

Mourinho, meanwhile, has admitted that he may be tempted to link up with a Scottish giant at some stage - with the outspoken former Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid boss currently in Turkey with Fenerbahce.

Gers legend McCoist has told talkSPORT Bet when asked if Gerrard or the ‘Special One’ would be good fits at Ibrox: “Yes, I think both could fit the bill in terms of stature and what they’d bring to the club and Scottish football in general. But they’d both need proper financial backing. The current squad just isn’t strong enough.”

McCoist added on Gerrard, who cut his coaching teeth with Rangers before struggling at Aston Villa and in the Middle East: “It’s absolutely vital that his next job is the right one. It didn’t quite work out at Villa or in Saudi. It’s similar to Frank Lampard - his move to Coventry has been crucial in getting his managerial career back on track. Steven’s in that same position. His next step needs to be spot on.”

Gerrard has admitted that he intends to return to the dugout at some stage in the near future. It is, however, former Swansea and Southampton manager Russell Martin that is currently favourite to take over at Ibrox in the summer of 2025.
