Italy determined to hire Claudio Ranieri as new coach despite ex-Chelsea & Leicester boss rejecting initial offer with Stefano Pioli eyed as alternative

Ranieri has turned down an initial offer from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) to become the national team head coach, according to Tuttosport. Despite the refusal, the FIGC remains committed to convincing the 73-year-old to take over from Spalletti, who announced his imminent departure on Sunday. Ranieri is currently in talks with Roma over a possible advisory role, and is reportedly evaluating whether he can hold dual responsibilities while serving both Roma and the national team.

Aiming to stabilise the post-Spalletti era and improve team spirit, FIGC president Gabriele Gravina is lobbying for Ranieri due to his expertise and leadership qualities. The offer includes a short-term commitment focused on qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. But if Ranieri backs out again, Stefano Pioli, who used to be the manager of AC Milan, has been named as the best alternative. Pioli, though, is currently considering a three-year offer from Fiorentina for €3 million per season after parting ways with Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr.

Italy have failed to qualify for the last two World Cups and Gravina's hunt for Ranieri shows a demand for a seasoned coach to guarantee qualifying for the USA, Mexico and Canada's 2026 event.

Whatever happens with the talks, all parties will be looking at Pioli, who is still in touch with Fiorentina. Italy's next game is a very important World Cup qualifier against Moldova on Monday, as they currently stand fourth in Group I.
