Injury woe for Alessia Russo! Arsenal star withdraws from Lionesses squad as England boss Sarina Wiegman calls up uncapped Brighton teenager Michelle Agyemang as cover

Russo took a knock to her ankle and was forced to leave the pitch in the 73rd minute in England's 5-0 demolition of Belgium in the Women's Nations League clash on Friday. The Gunners' forward has left the Lionesses squad as manager Sarina Wiegman has called up 19-year-old uncapped Brighton sensation Agyemang as her cover.

The official statement from the England football team read: "Michelle Agyemang has joined the England senior women’s squad for the first time. Agyemang, part of the WU19s squad who have successfully qualified for this summer’s EURO in Poland with a game to spare, replaces Alessia Russo. Russo has returned to Arsenal for further assessment on an injury sustained in the Lionesses’ 5-0 win against Belgium in Bristol on Friday. The 24-player squad depart St. George’s Park today as they prepare for Tuesday’s return fixture against the Red Flames in Leuven."

Russo's injury news comes only a day after Chelsea star Lauren James pulled out of the squad due to a hamstring problem, which limited her game time in the clash against Belgium. Tottenham's Jessica Naz has replaced James in the team.

The Lionesses will be back in action against the Red Flames for the reverse fixture on April 8 as the two teams will lock horns at Leuven.
