Explained: Why Man City's Premier League rivals fear 115 charges against champions will be dropped

Manchester City have been under investigation since 2022 when they were charged by the Premier League over 115 instances of financial irregularities. There has been speculation that if the Premier League champions are found guilty of the charges, they could be relegated from the English top tier to the Championship. However, their rivals believe that the charges could be dropped amid political pressure.

The fears of political interference come due to Manchester City's backing by the United Arab Emirates who have a key relationship with the United Kingdom government. The eight-time Premier League champions are majority-owned by Sheikh Mansour, a member of Abu Dhabi's ruling family and the UAE's vice-president and deputy prime minister. According to the The Times, Manchester City's rivals believe that the UK government could intervene in the proceedings regarding the charges, as they believe standing by may damage the country's trading relationship with the UAE.

The UK government's interest in footballing matters is nothing new as they also intervened in 2020 when a minister contacted the Premier League’s chairman over its initial refusal to allow the Saudi-backed Public Investment Fund (PIF) takeover of Newcastle United. In internal correspondence, government officials said there was an “immediate risk” to the UK’s relationship with Saudi Arabia if the Newcastle takeover did not succeed. As such, the PIF takeover was allowed to go through by the Premier League in 2021 after initial blocking.

An early 2025 resolution is anticipated for the lawsuit, which is scheduled for a hearing in November. City claim to have "irrefutable evidence" that will exonerate them on all 115 counts and have consistently denied any wrongdoing.
