Explained: Why Bukayo Saka & Gabriel Martinelli missed Arsenal training ahead of Champions League clash with PSV

Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli have handed Arsenal an unwelcome selection headache by sitting out training ahead of a meeting with PSV.

WHAT HAPPENED?
The Gunners are due to be back in Champions League action on Tuesday when taking in a trip to the Netherlands. Mikel Arteta is in a position to rotate his squad for that contest as Arsenal are already safely through to the last 16 as winners of Group B.

Arteta would, however, have wanted to name a strong side after seeing the Gunners drop precious points in their last Premier League outing against Aston Villa. The Spaniard may, however, be without the services of Saka and Martinelli as he is left short on options down either flank.

According to football.london, Brazilian forward Martinelli missed Arsenal’s final training session before facing PSV due to illness. Meanwhile, England international winger Saka is said to be nursing a knock to his foot.

In better news for Arsenal and Arteta, Emile Smith Rowe is back in training for the first time in six weeks. He will likely only be ready for a place on the bench if he does make the matchday squad against PSV, while Leandro Trossard is expected to fill in out wide as Martinelli and Saka face a race against time to prove their fitness.
