  • WHAT HAPPENED?

After losing the first-leg of this Champions League quarter-final in Paris 3-1 last week, Villa could ill afford any mistakes at Villa Park on Tuesday night. But that came in the 11th minute when Martinez failed to keep hold of Bradley Barcola's cross, following a mixup with defender Pau Torres, and Achraf Hakimi swept home seconds later. That led to a pile on for the Argentine on social media, with some saying he is "average as f*ck" and that compatriot Lionel Messi "gave him a career".

    WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

@john6011527 posted on X: "Emi Martinez is closer to Onana/Sanchez than Alisson/Courtois. One of the worst Yashin trophy winners ever..."

@1Utred tweeted: "Emi Martinez ticking bomb of a keeper. I’ll never forgive Messi and Maupay for giving this scrub a career."

@alimullaley commented: "How on earth does Martinez get called the “best keeper in the world?”

@Matt2860 stressed: "There is very few things in football I enjoy more than Martínez making a mistake for Villa. Average as f*ck."

Finally, @jonesniall94 added: "Emi Martinez’s PR is out of this world."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Unfortunately for Villa, it seems that they will be exiting the Champions League at the last eight stage after a superb run in the competition. Meanwhile, PSG may be favourites to go all the way this year.
