Brazil legend Marta to play at 2024 Paris Olympics as Selecao call up 'greatest athlete of all time'

In April, the 38-year-old Marta announced her plans to retire from international football by the end of this year. Nonetheless, her inclusion in the Olympics list underscores her impact on the Brazil squad and the high regard that Elias has for her.

Currently, Marta plays for Orlando Pride in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). She has made nine starts this campaign and boasts of having four goals and one assist.

Elias referred to her as "the greatest athlete of all time" and emphasised her substantial contribution to the squad. "She brings a lot to the table," Elias noted, indicating the multifaceted skills and leadership Marta offers.

"I have the challenge of finding a way of playing to maximise her game. But she knows that you can only win with everyone."

Throughout her career, Marta has come agonisingly close to Olympic glory. She won silver medals at the Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Olympics, with Brazil losing to the United States in both finals. And in Paris, she would hope to finish highest on the podium in what would be her last Olympics appearance.

Brazil find themselves in Group C along with Spain, Japan and Nigeria. They will begin their Olympics journey on July 25 against the Super Falcons in Bordeaux.
