  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Georgia Stanway has enjoyed an illustrious career for club and country, but says there's one major ambition she wants to fulfil... win the World Cup. Stanway has earned hero-status for the Lionesses after helping England to land two European Women's Championship titles. But says she will retire happily if they can become world champions.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Stanway was the beating heart of the Lionesses' midfield during the successful Euro campaigns in England (2022) and earlier this year in Switzerland. But she was also on the losing side when England lost 1-0 to Spain in the 2023 World Cup final.

  • WHAT STANWAY SAID

Stanway told The Guardian: "Win the World Cup and I’ll happily retire because then that’s all my dreams come true. It would have been really nice to do it in Australia but when you’re beaten by the better team, like Spain, you accept the situation. So we need to continue to grow and adapt and evolve. If we do that then there’s no reason why we can’t become world champions."

    DID YOU KNOW?

Stanway has more than one hundred tattoos on her body, many of which commemorate important moments in her life. One read: '19:32', which was the time the referee blew the whistle during the victorious 2022 final, and she also has II in Roman numerals inked on the back of her arm to acknowledge the two European Women's Championship crowns.
