Getty Images SportOmar Marmoush entered the penalty from the left flank and dribbled past Matty Cash before setting up the ball for Bernardo Silva to strike. The Portuguese winger aimed his shot straight at Martinez, who should have parried the ball away comfortably, but the Argentine goalkeeper's poor attempt at a save saw the ball roll into the Aston Villa net instead.
Villa fans were understandably furious at his costly mistake and they vented their anger on social media site X, formerly Twitter.
A fan named @Brady05203811 posted: "Emi martinez is getting silly, what an absolute idiot, every week with this same bullsh*t."
@Abdull_tjay posted: "Emi Martínez concedes way too many bozo goals to be called the best, he’s not even top 5, asides penalty saves in Copa America which he’s good at he’s so bang average."
@tdnightingale wrote: "For what is certainly not the first time this season, Emi Martínez really should not be conceding there."
@jimmytozer said: "Another Emi Martinez howler. That guy is not top quality."
@GreerSportsStar wrote: "Emi has been off it the past few matches. Has to be a save."
@AryanNaik134 called the World Cup-winning goalkeeper 'disgraceful' as he posted: "Ye Martinez I’m not defending u anymore pal that’s disgraceful keeping."
Getty Images SportDespite Martinez's error, Aston Villa soon equalised as Marcus Rashford scored from the penalty spot in the 18th minute. Manager Unai Emery fielded the Manchester United loanee as the team's No.9 as he kept star striker Ollie Watkins on the bench. The Spanish coach faced backlash online for benching the England international in an important Premier League clash.
