Alex Morgan injury: San Diego Wave boss Casey Stoney provides latest on USWNT legend's fitness with forward set to miss NWSL clash with Bay FC

Morgan suffered an ankle injury during the Wave's 1-0 defeat to the Orlando Pride last weekend, hobbling off in the latter stages of that game and looking clearly uncomfortable as she did so.

It was a worrying sight not just for San Diego but also the USWNT. Morgan is a key player for the U.S. and the Olympic Games begin in less than three months' time.

Speaking about the striker's availability for Sunday's game against California rivals Bay FC, San Diego Wave head coach Casey Stoney said: "She's got an ankle injury and she's out for this weekend, and then it'll be week by week from there."

While the Wave has plenty of top forwards on its roster, such as USWNT starlet Jaedyn Shaw, Morgan is an important focal point who is central to the make-up of the front line.

San Diego will need to adapt without her this weekend and possibly for even longer, depending on how serious the blow is. The USWNT is next in action on June 1, taking on South Korea in a friendly.
