For the first time in an eternity, Liverpool might actually be dreading a return to Anfield as they face Sunderland midweek in the Premier League.
Such were the horrors of their previous two home games. A 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest felt like a fever dream, but another 4-1 loss to PSV in the Champions League proved the nightmare was indeed real. The Reds found some solace in London last weekend as they beat West Ham 2-0. It helped stop the rot, but many would just put it down to West Ham being West Ham. Arne Slot will be hoping this is a turning point for his side as he went back to basics against the Irons. His bold gamble of dropping Mohamed Salah worked as Florian Wirtz ran the show and Alexander Isak found the back of the net for the first time in the league The manager will be hoping to string some good performances and wins together heading into the festive period. The Sunderland game will be a perfect acid test for his side.
Sunderland completed a dream comeback on the weekend as they erased a two-goal deficit and saw the game out with the lead in their hands. Regis Le Bris created history by becoming the first Sunderland manager to turn a 2-0 Premier League deficit into a victory. They must have watched tapes of West Ham not exploiting Liverpool's well-known direct route vulnerability. With all the tools to expose Liverpool's flaws, they will enter Anfield with a spring in their step. They have, however, never won against Liverpool in the Premier League at Anfield. Their last Anfield victory was in 1983, and Le Bris will be eager to make more history.

Liverpool vs Sunderland Team news & squads
Liverpool team news
Slot ended his post-match interview with a "we will see " when asked how Salah would slot into the lineup again. The Egyptian King's name on the teamsheet will generate plenty of debate again after Slot's new attacking trident clicked so well. With Salah set to stay until December 15 before leaving for AFCON, Slot has a huge call to make again. Isak will be eager to add more to his tally, but workload management might see Hugo Ekitike get the nod. Joe Gomez most probably will not have the luxury of back-to-back starts, as his fitness needs careful oversight as well. There might be rotation in some other parts of the field as well. No newcomers are joining the squad from the treatment room.
Predicted Lineups: Alisson; Szoboszlai, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Jones; Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo; Ekitike
Sunderland team news
Brian Brobbey is in sensational form and can no longer be used as a super sub. With Wilson Isidor's goals drying up, Le Bris could introduce the threat of Brobbey from the start. He will also be contemplating a back five to keep Liverpool at bay. They are without the services of Habib Diarra and Aji Alese.
Predicted Lineups: Roefa; Mukiele, Geertruida, Ballard, Alderte, Reinildo; Xhaka, Sadiki; Le Fee; Traore, Brobbey
