Man Utd HIC 2-1GOAL

Man Utd player ratings vs Rangers: Bruno Fernandes bails out Harry Maguire - captain's late volley grabs vital Europa League victory for Red Devils after costly slips from England defender

Manchester United have one foot in the Europa League knockout stage after Bruno Fernandes nicked a barely deserved 2-1 win over Rangers. The Red Devils looked to have thrown away victory when Harry Maguire lost track of Cyriel Dessers and gifted the substitute striker an 88th-minute equaliser which cancelled out Jack Butland's own goal.

But less than three minutes later Lisandro Martinez picked out the Portuguese 'Magnifico' in the area and the captain volleyed low past Butland to give United a fourth consecutive Europa League victory which took them into fourth in the standings, within touching distance of clinching their place in the last 16 ahead of their final game of the league phase next week at FCSB.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Altay Bayindir (7/10):

Had several awkward saves to make and was equal to each one. Thwarted Yilmaz and Raskin and reacted well to keep out Hamza Igamane's long-ranger which deflected off Martinez. A solid performance and an antidote to Andre Onana's gaffe-ridden last display.

    Leny Yoro (6/10):

It was his foul which saw De Ligt's goal ruled out. Defended competently but removed early in the second half.

    Matthijs de Ligt (5/10):

Loose with the ball, fortunate that Hamza Igamane did not intercept his unwise backpass. Used his physicality to head home and it was harsh to rule the goal out. Taken off at half-time for Maguire.

    Lisandro Martinez (6/10):

Moved the ball around well and wasn't far from beating Butland with a potent distance strike. Then provided the match-winning assist for Fernandes.

    Midfield

    Amad Diallo (6/10)

Had some flashes but couldn't do any real damage against the club where he spent a disappointing loan three years ago.

    Christian Eriksen (7/10):

His passing gave United control of much of the play and he had a good understanding with Garnacho. It was his corner which Butland punched in

    Toby Collyer (5/10):

Handed his first start under Amorim after some decent substitute displays. But he looked a bit overawed by the occasion. Mugged in possession leading to Nicolas Raskin's big early chance.

    Diogo Dalot (6/10):

Didn't get forward much but showed authority in defence, making some key interventions when shifted into the back three in second half.

    Attack

    Alejandro Garnacho (7/10):

The best player on the pitch. Tried to make stuff happen with thrusting runs inside and outside. Saw a goal-bound shot deflected over the bar but should have scored when he hit the post from inside the area.

    Joshua Zirkzee (6/10):

Made some nice touches to help United's build-up play but didn't get near the goal enough.

    Bruno Fernandes (7/10):

Focused a lot on launching passes from deep with mixed results but came up with the goods in the end.

    Subs & Manager

    Harry Maguire (4/10):

Made two big mistakes at either end. Should have buried his header but instead missed the target. Then his costly slip gifted Dessers the equaliser.

    Tyler Malacia (5/10):

Didn't do lots after replacing Yoro and moving to left wing-back.

    Manuel Ugarte (5/10):

    Toiled and bustled in midfield.

    Kobbie Mainoo (5/10):

    Should have got involved more.

    Rasmus Hojlund (N/A):

Brought on in the 82nd minute.

    Ruben Amorim (6/10):

Can't be happy with the performance but he has his first last-gasp win at Old Trafford and will likely avoid an unwanted play-off tie.
