  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Eagles wasted little time shoring up their pass rush after failing to bring down Dak Prescott once in the opener, inking veteran edge rusher Za'Darius Smith to a one-year deal worth up to $9 million, as per reports.

The team confirmed the signing on September 5.

Smith, who will celebrate his 33rd birthday on September 8, is gearing up for his 11th NFL campaign. A proven disruptor, he’s tallied 69 career sacks — nine of them coming last season while splitting time between the Browns and Lions.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

One would think the Eagles might slow things down after their primetime outing, but that's never been the way Howie Roseman and the Philly front office operate. On Friday, the team parted ways with rookie edge rusher Antwaun Powell-Ryland and brought in wideout Javon Baker to the practice squad.

That alone would qualify as a busy day, but the Eagles weren’t finished. Philadelphia followed it up by landing three-time Pro Bowler Za’Darius Smith, bolstering a defense that just keeps adding weapons.

The Eagles failed to sack Cowboys' QB Prescott Thursday night, partly down to the ejection of star defensive tackle Jalen Carter for spitting on the Prescott before the first snap.

For the reigning Super Bowl champs, it’s another splashy addition to a pass rush that needed reinforcements after losing players like Josh Sweat this offseason. Pairing Smith with fresh faces such as rookie Jihaad Campbell and veteran Josh Uche ensures the Eagles' front seven doesn't skip a beat. Another savvy, aggressive move by Roseman and company.
