Barcelona player ratings vs Atletico Madrid: Blaugrana’s title bid takes serious hit as dismal Fermin Lopez & Marc Casado let magical Pedri down in stoppage-time heartache

Barcelona suffered an agonising stoppage time defeat as Alexander Sorloth secured a smash-and-grab 2-1 win for Atletico Madrid that puts Diego Simeone's side top of La Liga.

The Blaugrana made their intentions clear right from the off as they harried and hassled their in-form opponents, who had won 11 games in a row in all competitions.

The dominant hosts - who were without the injured Lamine Yamal - deservedly took the lead on the half-hour mark when Pedri determinedly drove towards the box and then slotted past goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Raphinha was a whisker away from doubling his team's lead when his lobbed effort bounced off the crossbar and then soon after, they were hit with a sucker punch. After offering precious little, Barca failed to clear the ball and Rodrigo De Paul curled home a classy effort into the corner from the edge of the box in the 60th minute.

Atletico then went into lockdown mode and the home team struggled to break them down. Oblak made some excellent stops to deny Raphinha and Pedri, as Flick's team were left frustrated on Saturday night.

And then with virtually the last kick of the game, Sorloth emphatically rounded off a rapid counter-attack to break Barca hearts, secure their first away league win against their rivals since 2006, and leapfrog them into first place in the division.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Inaki Pena (6/10):

The keeper had nothing to do in the first half, as Atletico failed to register a shot, but came up with some vital stops in the second half. Couldn't keep out Sorloth's winner, though.

    Jules Kounde (6/10):

The Frenchman didn't do a lot wrong in truth but somehow came out on the losing side.

    Pau Cubarsi (6/10):

The 17-year-old had some good battles against the dangerous Julian Alvarez. Was undone at the death, however.

    Inigo Martinez (6/10):

Kept Antoine Griezmann quiet but struggled to deal with the physical Sorloth later on.

    Alejandro Balde (6/10):

The young defender looked good going forward but was a bit too open at the back.

    Midfield

    Pedri (8/10):

Was the pick of the midfielders as he showed tenacity, an excellent work rate, and a well-taken finish to boot.

    Marc Casado (5/10):

Got stuck in at the centre of the park but made a poor attempted clearance before Atletico's equaliser.

    Gavi (7/10):

Missed a good headed chance in the first half but played his part in assisting Pedri for the opener. A solid outing on the whole.

    Attack

    Raphinha (7/10):

The captain, who played on the right in Lamine Yamal's absence, was Barca's main attacking threat and on another night could have had a brace but wasn't at his best in front of goal.

    Robert Lewandowski (6/10):

Didn't get many opportunities in front of goal on a frustrating night for the veteran.

    Fermin Lopez (5/10):

Worked hard but didn't show the composure needed when in goalscoring positions. Was taken off just after the hour mark.

    Subs & Manager

    Dani Olmo (7/10):

Showed some intricate passing but couldn't quite unlock the away side's defence.

    Ferran Torres (7/10):

Offered more in his cameo than Lopez provided over the course of an hour or so.

    Eric Garcia (N/A):

Didn't get much time to make an impact.

    Hansi Flick (6/10):

The suspended manager was watching from the stands and while he would have been happy with their display on the whole, their inability to put games to bed is cause for concern. The decision to start Lopez didn't work, either.
