United fall into the relegation zone

United have dropped into the Premier League relegation zone following Nottingham Forest's victory over Manchester City. The alarming slide has increased the pressure on manager Carrick ahead of their clash with Aston Villa.

Carrick’s side showed fighting spirit in the Champions League during the week. They recovered from a two-goal deficit to secure a vital victory against Roma. Lacey played a crucial role in that comeback during a late substitute appearance. The teenager is now pushing for a starting spot against Villa.

Neville demands experience over youth

Despite Lacey's impressive midweek cameo, Neville has urged Carrick to resist the temptation to start the youngster. The former defender believes the current crisis demands proven senior players. Speaking to NBC Sport, Neville warned against relying on youth to rescue the season.

"I wouldn’t say it’s time to play kids, it’s a time for experience," he stated. "I think it’s something you do when you have talented kids for a start but when you’re absolutely desperate. This is a time for him to put his best team out on the pitch and they’ve got to go and deliver."

Emotion masks deeper tactical flaws

Neville admitted his shock at seeing his former club slip into the bottom three, calling the situation sobering. He also cautioned that their European comeback was driven by atmosphere rather than sustainable tactics.

"Sitting in the bottom three it’s incredible to see that, it’s sobering. What that night was on Wednesday was emotion," Neville added. "Manchester United got that goal and in European nights you’ve seen that before where the emotion carries you through wave after wave of attacks. The atmosphere is electric but that isn’t going to get you through all the difficult moments.

"You need performance, you need patterns, you need methodology as a player you need something to consistent and a default style of play. Manchester United have been really, really poor this season. If they go into the international break in the relegation zone it would be a desperate, desperate situation."
