Pereira took over as Sporting boss immediately after Amorim departed to join Manchester United. The fledgling manager had big shoes to fill, taking over from the man who guided the club to their first Liga Portugal title in 19 years in 2020-21, and then followed that up with another league success last term.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Sporting were top of the table when Pereira took charge and had recently demolished Manchester City in the Champions League in one of Amorim's last games in charge. Despite his tenure starting with a 6-0 win, they then lost four matches in a row and have fallen behind Benfica in the title race. Although they have won two and drawn one of their last three games, Record reports the coach's spell in charge is all but over, with Pereira having accepted that he is about to be sacked.
DID YOU KNOW?
Pereira, who made 40 appearances for the Portugal national team, ended his playing career at Sporting and was appointed as coach of the club's Under 23s team in 2022 before taking over the reserves just a few months before he was thrust in charge of the senior squad. Of the eight games they have played under him, the Lisbon club have won just three and drawn one.
