Inter: the curtain comes down on Acerbi, Darmian and De Vrij

Regardless of the outcome of the negotiations with Barcelona over Alessandro Bastoni, Inter are set for a genuine defensive overhaul this summer. In fact, three of the seven players currently available for Cristian Chivu’s three-man defence are set to leave the club.

This has been confirmed by Matteo Moretto, who points out that the club is no longer considering extending the contracts of three senior players in the squad: Francesco Acerbi, Stefan De Vrij and Matteo Darmian.

  • ACERBI OUT

What is certain – as evidenced by his lack of playing time in the second half of the season (just one start since January 2026 and only 45 minutes on the pitch against Fiorentina in the last nine league matches) – is that the relationship between Francesco Acerbi and Inter has come to an end. The move to Al-Hilal (managed by former Inter coach Simone Inzaghi) that failed to materialise in January due to Cancelo’s refusal will be completed on a free transfer this summer.

  • DARMIAN AND DE VRIJ SET TO LEAVE

The same applies – although no final decision has yet been made – to Matteo Darmian and Stefan De Vrij, two other key players from recent seasons in Milan, both of whom are coming to the end of their contracts, just like Acerbi.

The Dutchman, in particular, could still prove useful, especially if Bastoni’s departure were to materialise soon, but the Oaktree fund’s priority is to rejuvenate the squad, and with Akanji’s buy-back already planned and a possible switch to a back four, the former Lazio man could also be set to leave on a free transfer.
