    SATURDAY GAMES

PREMIER LEAGUE: EVERTON 2, WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS 0

GOAL verdict: Wolves have had a tough start to their season, losing their opening two games by a combined scoreline of 5-0. Everton, on the other hand, woke up after their opening day loss to Leeds and struck twice to beat Brighton in an eventful game. It does make the Toffees favorites and it’s hard not to see them getting a result.

PREMIER LEAGUE: SUNDERLAND 1, BRENTFORD 1

GOAL verdict: Sunderland kicked off their season with a win but then lost 2-0 to Burnley in a performance that was a stark contrast to opening day. Brentford pulled off a smash-and-grab victory over Aston Villa, with the return of Mikkel Damsgaard helping boost their confidence. Both sides are still working out the issues, making it tough to see either dominating.

LA LIGA: ATLETICO MADRID 2, DEPORTIVO ALAVES 2

GOAL verdict: Even though Atletico Madrid have yet to win a game in the 2025-26 La Liga season and Deportivo Alaves have already won once, the Los Rojiblancos are the favorites. They should easily dispatch ninth-place Alaves, who were battling against relegation last season. Yet, Diego Simeone’s side haven’t quite found their rhythm yet, and this could end in a hard-fought draw.

MLS: CF MONTREAL 2, TORONTO FC 1

GOAL verdict: Neither Toronto FC nor Montreal have been in great form this season, but the home side TFC haven’t won a game since they beat San Diego FC in mid-July. Montreal are coming off a 3-2 win over Austin FC, even if that was their first across all competitions since July 30. It doesn’t make for good reading for either side, but it does give Montreal the slight edge in the derby.

NWSL: KC CURRENT 2, NORTH CAROLINA COURAGE 0

GOAL verdict: KC Current have been in excellent form, unbeaten in the league since losing to Seattle on May 3. In the three months since, the Current have only dropped points once, in a 0-0 draw with the Orlando Pride. The Courage, on the other hand, haven’t been in the best form, drawing three out of their last four. This one goes to the Current.

    SUNDAY GAMES

PREMIER LEAGUE: LIVERPOOL 2, ARSENAL 1

GOAL verdict: Arsenal rolled past Leeds, 5-0, while Rio Ngumoha's stoppage-time winner secured Liverpool an incredible 3-2 victory over a Newcastle United side who played the majority of the game with 10 men. This will be a tough call between two title contenders, but go with the reigning champions, albeit in a rather close contest.

    SERIE A: JUVENTUS 2, GENOA 0

GOAL verdict: Juventus and new manager Igor Tudor opened their campaign with a commanding 2-0 win over Parma as new signing Jonathan David scored on debut. Meanwhile, Genoa played out a hard fought 0-0 draw over Lecce even if the statistics weighed heavily of the home side. Still, the Old Lady go into contest as favorites.

MLS: SAN DIEGO FC 1, LAFC 0

GOAL verdict: Despite the arrival of Son Heung-Min, LAFC have yet to hit their stride, having won just once in their last five MLS games. That run includes three draws and a loss, while San Diego FC have been the exact opposite. The expansion side sit at the top of the Western Conference and are unbeaten in their last five league games, a run that includes three wins. It gives them the edge, although one dulled by a 0-0 draw to Portland Timbers last weekend.
