Gareth Southgate makes statement on his future after England's heart-breaking Euro 2024 final loss to Spain

England lost 2-1 to Spain in Berlin on Sunday, making Southgate the first ever manager to be beaten twice in European Championship finals, having previously lost in the Euro 2020 final. He was heavily criticised for his team's playing style and his team selection throughout the tournament, and many fans have called for him to be sacked or resign in the wake of their latest heartbreak.

Asked about his future after the match, though, the manager told ITV that a decision will be made at a later date, saying: "I don’t think now is a good time to make a decision like that. I need to talk to the right people. It’s not for now."

Southgate added on England's performance in the final: "I think Spain were the best team in the tournament. We didn’t keep the ball well enough. We were in it until the last 10 minutes. I’m devastated for everyone. We have just fallen a little short. They have represented the shirt with pride and haven’t been beaten until the very end. I just think tonight Spain had more control of the game."

It has been reported that the Football Association wants Southgate to remain at the helm of the England squad regardless of their defeat to Spain. Former England stars Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer expect the coach to step down, however, with the Match of the Day presenter saying on BBC One: "I suspect Gareth Southgate may have had enough. It is a tough, gruelling job."

Shearer added: "I suspect it will be Southgate's last game. From where he took over and where they are now. There will be great disappointment at home. Yes, we could have played more attacking football but they have got to the final. But when you are here, you have got to get over the line."

England will regroup and start looking towards the 2026 World Cup. While the likes of Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Cole Palmer are likely to be key figures for that campaign, it is not yet known if Southgate will still be in charge.
