Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the Italian Mercedes driver, at 19 years, 6 months and 18 days, has become the youngest pole-sitter in Formula 1 history, breaking a record that had stood since 2008, when Sebastian Vettel achieved it at Monza with Toro Rosso.
It had been 16 years since an Italian had started from pole position; the last to do so was Giancarlo Fisichella in 2009. Antonelli’s performance could mark the start of a long run of successes.
