Virginia Tech had a tougher start, falling 24-11 to South Carolina. Hokies quarterback Kyron Drones endured an inconsistent afternoon, throwing for 221 yards but failing to find the end zone while tossing two interceptions on 15-of-35 passing. He did add 26 rushing yards on 12 attempts. Running back Marcellous Hawkins paced the ground game with 58 yards, while Donavon Greene provided the biggest spark through the air with three receptions for 94 yards.

The Commodores opened their season in style, dismantling Charleston Southern 45-3. Quarterback Diego Pavia was sharp, completing 20 of 25 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns while also tucking the ball for 44 yards on the ground. Running back Sedrick Alexander chipped in 83 rushing yards on 12 carries (6.9 YPC) and added a touchdown reception, while wideout Eli Stowers stretched the field with four catches for 86 yards.
