    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Both sides have invested heavily while chasing the dream - which is to eventually reach the Premier League - but the playing field begins to level in that department the closer that any side moves towards the top-flight.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will make more funds available at Wrexham, regardless of the division that the Red Dragons finds themselves in, while NFL legend Tom Brady forms part of the board at Birmingham as they piece together an ambitious project.

    WHAT ALAN SHEARER SAID

Plenty of intriguing stories are being written in North Wales and the West Midlands, but ex-England star and Premier League legend Alan Shearer has told Betfair of what the immediate future could hold: “I would like to see both Birmingham and Wrexham in the Premier League one day. I think it's great what's happening at those football clubs. But I also would be cautious because of what they'll be able to spend in the Championship.

“It's very different in League One to what they can come in and do in the Championship. Whether they'll be able to go on and push on as much as they'd like, or can in terms of financials is very different now they've reached that level.

“Wrexham had a great result the other day and Wycombe were beaten 4-0 at home, so that was an incredible result for them. It's turned the other way towards Wrexham now. Again, two huge football clubs with massive fanbases, both Wrexham and Birmingham.”

  • WHAT NEXT?

Birmingham are considered by many to be better placed for a push towards the Premier League - having graced that level previously and drawn up plans for a new 62,000-seater stadium - but Reynolds and McElhenney have left the door open for more investors to join them at Wrexham, which would help to make them even more competitive.
