    THE BIGGER PICTURE

PSG's No.1 stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma has come under criticism in recent years but will now have some serious competition to keep him on his toes. The French giants strive to compete in the Champions League every season and will need each individual in their squad to perform at their peak if they are to win that elusive Champions League trophy - including the goalkeepers.

  • WHAT SAFONOV SAID

Speaking for the first time as a PSG player, he said: "I’m really happy to be joining Paris Saint-Germain, one of the world’s biggest clubs in terms of its history and what it has won. I can’t wait to meet my new teammates, defend my new colours and make the fans proud. Allez Paris!"

Safonov will have to wait until pre-season to get his PSG debut but he should see plenty of game time ahead of the 2024-25 season. PSG strolled to the Ligue 1 title last term but Safonov and his team-mates will have their sights set higher next season.
