Pay up, Arsenal! Sporting set for new windfall as Viktor Gyokeres rediscovers scoring form

  • Derby double costs Arsenal

According to reports from Portuguese outlet O Jogo, the striker is on the verge of activating a specific performance-related clause that will see Arsenal transfer another €500,000 (£430,000) into Sporting CP's coffers. The agreement structured during his high-profile move to London is heavily based on tangible output, and his double against Spurs has brought a significant milestone within touching distance. For every block of 20 goal involvements Gyokeres achieves, the Lions are entitled to a windfall, and the 26-year-old is now knocking on that door.

The cost of north London derby dominance

The numbers behind the deal highlight just how much faith Arsenal placed in the striker's ability to translate his Primeira Liga form to the Premier League. Gyokeres currently boasts 18 goal contributions this season, comprised of 15 goals and three assists across all competitions.

With the magic number set at 20, the former Coventry City man needs just two more involvements to trigger the payment. This is not a one-off, either; the contract dictates that an additional €500,000 becomes due for every subsequent pack of 20 contributions he registers throughout his tenure. Sporting CP have carefully protected their interests through these staggered bonuses. When Gyokeres initially signed for a fixed fee of €63.5m (£54.6m), the deal included potential add-ons totalling €10m (£8.6m).

While A Bola suggests the initial figure was slightly higher at €65.7m, the consensus remains that the Lisbon giants are the primary beneficiaries of the Swede’s success in England. They have already banked €1.25m (£1.1m) after the striker completed 20 matches playing at least 45 minutes, ensuring a steady stream of income despite the lack of a traditional sell-on clause.

  • The turning point

It hasn't always been plain sailing for the man tasked with leading the line for the Gunners. Early in the campaign, the British and European press were quick to sharpen their knives, questioning whether Gyokeres could ever justify his hefty price tag. His initial adaptation period was subject to intense scrutiny, with pundits suggesting he looked out of his depth as he struggled to find the back of the net during his first few weeks in the capital. Many wondered if the jump from Lisbon to London was a step too far for the powerful forward.

However, the narrative has shifted dramatically. Under Arteta’s guidance, Gyokeres has transformed into an undisputed starter and the focal point of the Arsenal attack. Across 36 appearances this term, he has logged 2,344 minutes, proving his durability and reliability in a gruelling Premier League schedule.

    Worth every penny

The structured bonus model employed by Arsenal is beginning to look like a masterstroke of recruitment, aligning financial layout directly with on-pitch production. Unlike many experimental transfers that fail to deliver, every penny sent back to Portugal represents a successful return on investment for the Londoners. With 10 Premier League goals already to his name, Gyokeres is providing the clinical edge that the Gunners have often lacked in tight title races, justifying the decision to invest so heavily in his services.

As the business end of the season approaches, the focus remains on whether Gyokeres can lead Arsenal to silverware. With the Champions League and domestic duties still on the agenda, those two remaining goal contributions required to trigger the next windfall feel like a matter of 'when', not 'if'. For Sporting CP, the gift that keeps on giving remains in full effect, while for Arsenal fans, the sight of their leading man finding his stride in the derby is worth every penny of the impending half-million-euro payout.
