  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Oklahoma State University has officially parted ways with Mike Gundy, ending his more than two-decade tenure as the Cowboys’ head football coach, sources told ESPN.

The move comes just days after Oklahoma State fell 19-12 to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane at Boone Pickens Stadium in a nationally televised matchup. During the game, fans in the student section could be heard chanting, "Fire Gundy!"

The Cowboys began the season 1-2, including a crushing 69-3 loss to Oregon, and were coming off a disappointing 3-9 campaign in 2024, which featured nine consecutive losses in Big 12 play. Their sole win of 2025 came in the season opener against UT Martin, a game in which quarterback Hauss Hejny suffered a broken foot.

THE BIGGER PICTURE: END OF AN ERA

Mike Gundy, who had been at the helm for 21 seasons, leaves as the winningest coach in Oklahoma State football history with a 170-90 record. During his tenure, the Cowboys captured the outright Big 12 title in 2011, shared the Big 12 South crown in 2010, and reached the Big 12 Championship Game in both 2021 and 2023.

Ahead of the 2025 season, the Oklahoma State Board of Regents adjusted Gundy's contract, reducing his salary by $1 million and lowering his buyout to $15 million. Only Iowa's Kirk Ferentz, in his 27th season, is longer tenured in Division 1 than Gundy.
