  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Athletic reported last week that Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group are exploring a deal to acquire Spanish second division side Malaga. Since last summer, FSG have been evaluating several European clubs to bring them under their umbrella to develop a multi-club model, and are reportedly ready to fight it out with Paris Saint-Germain owners to take over Malaga.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Daily Mail now reports that if FSG manage to acquire Malaga, it would help the Reds to beat British laws. The latest Brexit rules do not allow English clubs to sign a player from abroad under the age of 18. If Malaga come under FSG's control as a feeder club, the Premier League giants would be able to nurture their U18 talents in Spain and send across over-18 players who fail to procure work permits in the UK.

Manchester City have, to a certain extent, followed this trend since they bought a majority stake at Girona, who qualified for this season's Champions League thanks to the efforts of players like Savinho.
