Explained: Why Viktor Gyokeres hasn't been announced by Arsenal yet as Sporting continue review of 'legal issues'

After several months of intense speculation, with the prolific Swedish striker being linked with clubs around the world, Premier League giants from Emirates Stadium have finally put an acceptable offer on the table.

A big-money deal worth £64 million ($86m), which includes a number of add-ons, will take Gyokeres away from Lisbon and over to north London. Mikel Arteta was hoping to have a new No.9 on his books by now, but a protracted saga continues to drag on.

Portuguese news outlet Record has explained why that is the case, saying: "With Luis Suarez on his way to Sporting, Gyokeres is ready to head to Arsenal. The Lions accepted the Gunners’ offer on Wednesday, and since then, the clubs have been exchanging documents and reviewing formal aspects and legal issues, some of which are last-minute.

"This 'extension' postponed the 'officialisation' of the agreement for another day, contradicting the most optimistic prospects, which pointed to the deal being finalised yesterday."

Record go on to say that “barring a setback or a coup d’etat”, Gyokeres will become an Arsenal player. O Jogo adds that a medical will be completed on Friday, freeing the 27-year-old to fly out to Singapore and join the Gunners on their pre-season tour.

Arsenal are set to face Newcastle in a friendly contest on Sunday, before then tackling arch-rivals Tottenham on July 31. They will head back to the UK for two games on home soil, including the annual Emirates Cup, before the 2025-26 Premier League campaign gets underway.
