How England's Lionesses should line up vs China in 2023 Women's World Cup: Jordan Nobbs deserves a chance after Keira Walsh injury

How do you replace a player who is irreplaceable? After star midfielder Keira Walsh was stretchered off against Denmark, that's the task England head coach Sarina Wiegman has on her hands as the Lionesses prepare to face China in their final group game of the Women's World Cup. Her team need a point against the Asian champions to reach the last 16, and it'd be a huge shock if they didn't get it, even with Walsh's absence a huge blow.

But who will Wiegman trust to take control in the middle of the park for this match? In Friday's game, it was Laura Coombs that she introduced to replace Walsh, with Georgia Stanway dropping into the deeper midfield role. She may choose to make a different decision on Tuesday, though, with Jordan Nobbs well in contention to start after a really impressive second half of the season at Aston Villa. The 30-year-old joined the club from Arsenal in January and has shown excellent form since.

That's not the only decision Wiegman has to ponder, either. She changed her defence for the Denmark meeting, moving Alex Greenwood into the centre after she'd played on the left against Haiti and putting striker Rachel Daly in at full-back. Will she stick with the same back four this time?

There are also questions further up the pitch. Lauren James came in for Lauren Hemp in that last outing, while Alessia Russo and Ella Toone are still both struggling to find form.

So, what should Wiegman's starting XI look like for this important clash with China? GOAL has its say...

  • Mary Earps England 2023Getty Images

    GK: Mary Earps

Mary Earps continues to be reliable as ever in between the sticks for England, her positioning allowing her to comfortably keep out Denmark's efforts on target on Friday to record another clean sheet.

With the Lionesses still to secure their place in the knockout rounds, there's little to no chance of Wiegman giving another goalkeeper a shot in the final group-stage game.

  • Lucy Bronze England Women 2023Getty

    RB: Lucy Bronze

Despite not being at her best yet in the tournament, Lucy Bronze should start again at right-back on Tuesday. Wiegman has other options here, albeit ones not as natural to the role, but none are of the calibre of Bronze, with the four-time Champions League winner sure to hit higher levels sooner rather than later.

  • Millie Bright England Women 2023Getty

    CB: Millie Bright

Another player not in great form, Millie Bright made her return to competitive action in England's World Cup opener against Haiti and looked very rusty. She was better against Denmark but is still finding her form again after four months on the sidelines.

As the captain of this team, though, and with the Lionesses having recorded back-to-back clean sheets, she will be at the heart of defence again and is sure to improve. After all, she's a top player.

  • Alex Greenwood England Women 2023Getty

    CB: Alex Greenwood

After starting the first game at left-back, Greenwood was moved into the centre against Denmark and was able to have much more of an influence on the game from there. The Manchester City star put in a strong performance and is likely to partner Bright again on Tuesday.

  • Rachel Daly England Women 2023Getty

    LB: Rachel Daly

After calls for her to lead the line for England following a season that saw her score 22 goals in as many league games, Rachel Daly was in the starting XI on Friday - albeit, at left-back.

It's a real problem position for the Lionesses, with very few natural options available to Wiegman. But at the Euros last summer, Daly did a solid job in adapting to the role, starting every game as the team went on to win the title.

She was certainly not expected to return to the defence for her country after how excellent she has been up front for Aston Villa this past year, but the forward played well there against Denmark to keep a clean sheet. With big tweaks to be made to the midfield, Wiegman will likely appreciate consistency elsewhere and not change the back four.

  • Georgia Stanway England 2023Getty Images

    CM: Georgia Stanway

After Walsh was stretchered off against Denmark, it's anticipated that Stanway will drop into the deeper midfield role to cover for her absence. The Bayern Munich star has operated in the position a few times before and did a good job when moved there on Friday, too.

Wiegman could opt for a different approach and play Katie Zelem here, the Manchester United captain assuming the role every week for her club, but her decision during the Denmark game to put Stanway in front of the defence is likely telling and probably the best option given her experience and quality.

  • Jordan Nobbs England Women 2023Getty

    CM: Jordan Nobbs

The big question is who will assume Stanway's role in midfield? Wiegman put Laura Coombs in there from the bench on Friday, but the Manchester City star struggled to make an impact on the game. That said, England generally struggled after Walsh's injury and the match was probably not a fair reflection of what Coombs can bring to the team.

But this should be Jordan Nobbs' chance to shine. The Aston Villa midfielder ended the season in wonderful form after a January transfer from Arsenal and is without a doubt one of the most talented footballers in this squad.

She's had rotten luck over the years with injuries, especially around major tournaments, but Nobbs can bring something special to the table and deserves the opportunity to prove it against China.

  • Ella Toone England Women 2023Getty

    CM: Ella Toone

Ella Toone's form at this tournament has been poor. In fact, the Manchester United star has struggled to shine for her country since her role changed from that of a super sub to a starter after the Euros last year.

But now it's time to see what she's really made of. With Stanway likely to drop deeper, England will lose the creativity she has brought to the midfield while Toone has underwhelmed, so she needs to step up and deliver.

She's clearly a very talented footballer, everyone knows that, but if she cannot showcase it in this final group game, Wiegman could elect to drop her in favour of someone else for the knockout stages - assuming England get the point they need against China to qualify.

  • Lauren James England Women's World CupGetty Images

    RW: Lauren James

Chloe Kelly has started both of England's games on the right wing so far in the tournament, but she's not set the world alight just yet and a rest could be useful ahead of the knockout stages.

Lauren James was deployed on the left on Friday and did exceptionally well, scoring a stunning goal, but she forms a fantastic partnership down the right with Bronze when the pair play together. Switching her to the opposite side won't hinder her impact on the game and could get more out of the full-back, too.

  • Alessia Russo England women Getty Images

    ST: Alessia Russo

Alessia Russo has yet to arrive in this tournament, but with significant change needed elsewhere in the team, and with Daly at left-back, it's unlikely that Wiegman will drop her to the bench.

Beth England almost scored when she replaced Russo off the bench on Friday but it still feels like a change to the line-up would be a shock.

  • Lauren Hemp England Women 2023Getty

    LW: Lauren Hemp

After dropping to the bench for the game against Denmark, Lauren Hemp should come back into the team on Tuesday in order to keep legs fresh. The Man City winger was lively against Haiti and should benefit from the rest she was given on Friday.
