Chelsea firesale! Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic and the players that might leave Stamford Bridge this summer

It seems that Chelsea's reckless spending may finally be catching up with them.

Earlier this week it was revealed that the club had made an eye-watering loss of £121 million ($149m) during the 2021-22 financial period – a deficit the current ownership has blamed on the economic sanctions imposed on the club and former owner Roman Abramovich following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

In light of this news, you might have expected Todd Boehly & Co. to cut their cloth accordingly for 2022-23. They thought differently, though, splashing an obscene £600m over the past two transfer windows.

Even with some creative accounting, Chelsea will surely have to move on some players in the summer to avoid punishment from the footballing authorities.

Fortunately for them, there are plenty of candidates for the chopping block. Below, GOAL takes a look at 13 players who could be sold at the end of the season.

  • Ethan Ampadu Spezia 2022-23Getty Images

    Ethan Ampadu

One of the most committed members of Chelsea's loan army, Ethan Ampadu has spent the past four seasons away from Stamford Bridge.

Starting out on loan at RB Leipzig during the 2019-20 campaign, the prestige of the teams Ampadu has been on loan at has steadily decreased since then: Sheffield United, Venezia and now Spezia.

With just one year left on his Chelsea contract, it's time for the Wales international – who has made more appearances for his country than any other single club – to find a new, permanent home.

    Baba Rahman

Yes, you have read that correctly – Abdul-Rahman Baba is still somehow under contract in west London.

The left-back joined the club all the way back in 2015 and has spent time on loan in Germany, France, Spain and Greece since.

In recent seasons he's been with Championship side Reading, where he is a regular starter when fit. He's not going to fetch much of a transfer fee, but hopefully the Royals can be convinced to finally rid Chelsea of one of their longest-serving players this summer.

  • Mercato Malang Sarr AS MonacoAS Monaco

    Malang Sarr

Malang Sarr always seemed like a strange signing. After arriving in the summer of 2020, he was immediately shipped out on loan and, despite enjoying a short stint in the first team during an injury crisis, he's never really fully convinced at Chelsea.

Sarr is currently at Monaco, and it is believed that the Ligue 1 side have the option to make the switch permanent for around £10 million ($12m) this summer.

Should they not exercise that option, he should still have suitors. Several other French clubs would be interested, while Sevilla were linked in January.

  • Tiemoue BakayokoGetty

    Tiemoue Bakayoko

Again, please do not adjust your screens, Tiemoue Bakayoko is indeed still a Chelsea player. After playing a vital role in the Monaco team that reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2017, Bakayoko was one of several members of that squad to earn a big-money move elsewhere.

He flopped badly in England, though, and has since been out on loan. AC Milan have an option to make his move permanent this summer, but that is unlikely given his underwhelming performances at San Siro.

His wages will be a stumbling block for any other interested parties and Bakayoko may be content to sit out the remaining year of his contract. Chelsea, of course, will be desperate to move him on.

  • Conor Gallagher Chelsea 2022-23Getty Images

    Conor Gallagher

Conor Gallagher is the first player mentioned with genuine value in the transfer market. Not only is he homegrown – meaning his transfer fee will appear as pure profit on the club's accounts – he also proved that he can perform in the Premier League during his loan spell at Crystal Palace.

The Eagles have missed him desperately this season and if they can remain in the Premier League, they will surely come in for this summer.

They won't be the only team interested either. Gallagher would make a solid addition to the vast majority of clubs in the English top flight and although Chelsea would likely prefer to keep him around, the allure of receiving £40m ($48m) plus for the fringe player will likely be too much to resist.

  • Ruben Loftus-Cheek Chelsea 2022-23Getty Images

    Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Ruben Loftus-Cheek's career has followed a familiar, maddening pattern. Namely, spells of real promise punctuated by niggling injuries.

This issue has reared its ugly head again this season, with the midfielder's impressive emergence as a wing-back being undercut by a poorly-timed calf injury.

As with Gallagher, Loftus-Cheek has not necessarily performed poorly, but as he can attract a lucrative windfall in the transfer market, he will likely find himself nudged towards the exit door at Stamford Bridge.

  • Christian Pulisic USMNT 2022 World CupGetty

    Christian Pulisic

Few Chelsea players attract as much media attention as the USMNT's golden boy. And while Christian Pulisic has enjoyed some great moments at Chelsea, 26 goals in 139 appearances is an ultimately underwhelming return.

It is increasingly feeling like Pulisic has run out of road in west London. No longer a breakthrough prospect at 24, the Hershey-born forward needs to start fulfilling his potential – something which may be impossible at Chelsea due to their bloated attacking ranks.

Pulisic has plenty of options for his next step. He may feel he has unfinished business in the Premier League, though there will be plenty of interest on the continent too.

  • Armando BrojaGetty

    Armando Broja

Despite plying his trade for Albania internationally, Armando Broja is classed as homegrown, making him ripe to be moved on for a sizable profit.

Before an ACL injury ended his season in December, Broja had been featuring sparingly for the Chelsea first team – after being linked with a move away from the club for most of the summer.

During a loan spell with Southampton last season, he scored six times, but this meagre tally doesn't tell the whole story of a largely impressive season. He can lead the line effectively and would be capable of being a lower-tier Premier League team's first-choice No.9.

  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Chelsea 2022-23 Getty Images

    Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

    What a terrible transfer!

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been nothing but trouble since making the surprise switch to Stamford Bridge, and recent reports suggest that his decision to jet off to Spain for El Clasico may have been the final straw, with the Blues preparing to terminate his contract.

Aubameyang, for his part, likely wants out too. He is understood to favour a return to Barcelona and could reduce his wage demands to make the move happen.

  • Callum Hudson-Odoi Bayer Leverkusen 2022-23Getty

    Callum Hudson-Odoi

Once tipped to be a Chelsea first-teamer, Callum Hudson-Odoi's career has stalled badly in recent times.

After enduring an injury-affected 2021-22 campaign, the forward was sent out on loan to Bayer Leverkusen. Fitness problems have again hampered his progress, though, with the England international making just 13 Bundesliga appearances so far.

Chelsea's lavish January spending has seemingly left Hudson-Odoi without a place at his boyhood club and it would be little surprise to see him included in the summer clear-out.

  • 20230201_Ziyech(C)Getty images

    Hakim Ziyech

Hakim Ziyech should not even be at Chelsea currently. If not for the Blues' liberal approach to paperwork deadlines, the Morrocan would have joined Paris Saint-Germain on loan this winter.

That mix-up supposedly caused a rift between the clubs, and Ziyech will be hoping the atmosphere will have cooled in time for the summer transfer market, as he seems to have no future at Stamford Bridge.

He's too old to not be playing regularly and would surely move on happily at the end of the season.

  • Mason-Mount(C)Getty Images

    Mason Mount

This is the decision that will cause the most head-scratching at Chelsea this summer. Rumours that Mason Mount may leave the club this summer refuse to go away. A new contract has still not been agreed, with Liverpool and Bayern Munich – now managed by former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel – are circling.

Despite being a divisive figure within the fanbase, Mount has been a constant fixture of the first team in recent years, with a conveyor belt of managers valuing his discipline off the ball and offensive production.

However, his numbers are down significantly this season and with just one year left on his current deal, Chelsea have a huge call to make in the next few months.

  • 20230203_Kovacic(C)Getty images

    Mateo Kovacic

It had long been reported that Chelsea were only planning to keep hold of one of N'Golo Kante or Mateo Kovacic. And with Kante closing in on a new contract, the Croatian's future is unclear.

The Blues are yet to kick off talks over a new deal and Tuchel is supposedly keen on taking one of his former trusted lieutenants to Bavaria at the end of the season.

Selling Kovacic seems like a risk. Not only has he always been a solid performer, Kante's injury issues means the France international cannot be relied upon to be the long-term partner of Enzo Fernandez.

As with many of these deals, though, the decision may be taken out of Chelsea's hands if they receive an acceptable offer.
