Champions League Team of the Group Stage 2023-24 GFXGOAL

Champions League team of the group stages: Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka form all-English attack!

The group stage of the 2023-24 Champions League has drawn to a dramatic conclusion, with Paris Saint-Germain only surviving the 'Group of Death' because of Newcastle's second-half collapse at home to AC Milan.

Manchester City and Real Madrid had no such trouble, with both sides winning all six of their games, while Bayern Munich, Inter, Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid all progressed without losing once. But before we start looking forward to the last 16, let's take a look back at the group stage and, in particular, its star performers.

Below, GOAL picks out its team of the tournament so far, but certain selections are bound to surprise, so feel free to post your own line-ups in the comments section at the foot of the page....

  • Sommer Inter BenficaGetty

    GK: Yann Sommer (Inter)

Beppe Marotta has done it again! Having sold Andre Onana to Manchester United for a whopping £44 million, Inter's transfer market maestro brought in Yann Sommer on a free. To say the Swiss has proven an upgrade on the Cameroonian would be putting it mildly. While Onana has proven a disaster at Old Trafford, Sommer has quickly become a fan favourite at San Siro.

So, despite strong competition from Alex Remiro and Nick Pope, the Swiss takes the No.1 shirt after keeping three clean sheets in five group games and posting a staggering 90 percent save percentage - the best in the competition among goalkeepers to have seen at least 10 minutes of action.

  • Sacha Boey Galatasaray 2023-24 Champions LeagueGetty

    RB: Sacha Boey (Galatasaray)

Galatasaray may have failed to reach the last 16 but Sacha Boey succeeded in showing precisely why Bacary Sagna has described his fellow Frenchman as the ideal right-back for former club Arsenal.

The 23-year-old scored announced his arrival into the group stage by netting a crucial late goal in his side's 2-2 draw with Copenhagen on matchday one and he continued to carry a serious attacking threat for the remainder of the Turkish champions' campaign.

However, what really stood out about Boey was his defensive work. He won more duels (50) than any other defender in the tournament, while he also ranked second possession won (48). Expect even more interest in the former France Under-21 international next summer.

  • Mats Hummels Borussia Dortmund 2023-24 Champions LeagueGetty

    CB: Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

Thirty-four years of age and still going strong. There were those that felt Mats Hummels was finished at the very highest level but the centre-back is one of the main reasons why Borussia Dortmund incredibly managed to finish top of the 'Group of Death'.

Hummels was particularly impressive in the 3-1 victory at San Siro that secured BVB's place in the last 16, with coach Edin Terzic labelling the Germany international a "football god". His performances have certainly been divine, with Hummels featuring in the top 10 of so many metrics for defenders at the end of the group stage (tackles won, possession won, duels won, interceptions) that he was a shoo-in for inclusion at the heart of our back four.

  • Igor Zubeldia Real Sociedad 2023-24 Champions LeagueGetty

    CB: Igor Zubeldia (Real Sociedad)

It would be remiss of us not to include a Real Sociedad player in our back four, given the unbeaten Basques boast the best defence in the Champions League so far. La Real kept four clean sheets in six outings and much of the credit must go to their two centre-backs, Igor Zubeldia and Robin Le Normand.

The latter was very impressive, particularly in the 0-0 draw with Inter, but Zubeldia started every game and had the superior stats. It is also worth pointing out that the 26-year-old also completed more passes than any other Sociedad player, which is perhaps no great shock when one considers that the academy product used to operate as a defensive midfielder.

  • David Raum RB Leipzig 2023-24 Champions LeagueGetty

    LB: David Raum (RB Leipzig)

Both Manchester United and Manchester City were linked with David Raum before he joined RB Leipzig from Hoffenheim in the summer of 2022 for around €26m (£22m/$28m). The city rivals may regret not making a concrete bid for the offensive left-back, whose value has increased significantly over the past 18 months.

An absolutely tremendous outlet down Leipzig's left flank, Raumhad more successful crosses (15) than any other player during the group stage, while no defender created more chances (15). The Germany international set up two goals in total while he was also on target in the 3-1 home win over Red Star Belgrade that put Marco Rose's side back on track for the last 16.

  • Zaire-EmeryGetty Images

    CM: Warren Zaire-Emery (Paris Saint-Germain)

It is frankly outrageous for Warren Zaire-Emery to be so good at just 17 years of age. For all the money spent by Paris Saint-Germain during the past few years, it was an academy product that played the biggest role in keeping this season's Champions League dream alive, with Zaire-Emery scoring the equaliser at Borussia Dortmund that enabled Luis Enrique's side to finish above AC Milan. on account of their superior head-to-head record.

The midfielder had also run the show in the matchday three route of the Rossoner that actually proved decisive in separating the two sides, racking up two assists in a 3-0 win that confirmed a new star had been born at the Parc des Princes.

  • Martin Zubimendi Real Sociedad 2023-24 Champions LeagueGetty

    CM: Martin Zubimendi (Real Sociedad)

As a brilliant Basque defensive midfielder starring in San Sebastian, Martin Zubimendi is inevitably drawing comparisons with the great Xabi Alonso right now.

The 24-year-old may not have quite reached his compatriot's level just yet but he was absolutely integral to Real Sociedad's progression to the last 16 of the Champions League for just the second time in the club's history, with Zubimendi doing an outstanding job dictating the pace of the game while also protecting a back four that conceded just twice in six games.

Indeed, he was twice named man of the match, most notably in the 0-0 draw at Inter that clinched top spot in Group C for La Real, underlining precisely why both Arsenal and Barcelona have been previously linked with La Real's classy No.4.

  • Rasmus Falk Copenhagen 2023-24 Champions LeagueGetty

    CM: Rasmus Falk (Copenhagen)

After Copenhagen qualified for the last 16 - for just the second time in their history and at the expense of Galatasaray and Manchester United - Rasmus Falk told Viaplay, "It shouldn't be possible with the group we ended up in. I'm so damn proud. It's rare that this happens to a Danish team, so it's huge."

Falk's performances were just as colossal, though. With Copenhagen having reached the halfway point of the group stage with just one point gain, the 31-year-old stepped up big time, producing three consecutive man of the match-winning displays as FCK stunned the football world.

  • Bukayo Saka heart Arsenal Sevilla Champions League 2023-24Getty

    RW: Bukayo Saka (Arsenal)

In a wholly predictable development, Bukayo Saka looks right at home in the Champions League. After playing a starring role in Arsenal securing a return to Europe's premier cup competition for the first time since the 2016-17 season, the England ace illuminated the group stage. As well as scoring three goals, Saka also racked up four assists - more than any other player in the tournament.

Doubts remain over Arsenal's title credentials, particularly in relation to the uncertainty surrounding the goalkeeping position, but it's clear that in Saka they possess a player capable of destroying any defence with his shooting, speed and silky skills.

  • Harry Kane Bayern Munich 2023-24Getty

    CF: Harry Kane (Bayern Munich)

Manchester United might still be in Europe if Harry Kane had been on their side on Tuesday night instead of lining up against them for Bayern Munich! The England international has long been regarded as a world-class striker but his form since joining the Bavarians from Tottenham during the summer has still been stunning, with Kane netting 22 times in 20 outings to date.

Bayern's €100m (£86m/$108m) man didn't manage to find the back of the net at Old Trafford but he did provide the assist for Kingsley Coman's winner, meaning he has been directly involved in seven goals in six appearances in this season's Champions League. Just a class act.

  • Jude Bellingham celebrates Real Madrid Napoli 2023-24 Champions LeagueGetty

    LW: Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid)

Jude Bellingham was always going to make a big impact at the Santiago Bernabeu. He'd already been lighting up the Champions League as a teenager at Borussia Dortmund. But did anybody really expect him to be this good, this quickly?!

Bellingham has taken his game to a whole new level since joining Real Madrid during the summer, scoring 16 times in 19 appearances in all competitions for his new club. Four of those goals have come in the Champions League, including a stunning strike against Napoli that had some pundits comparing the 20-year-old to Diego Maradona.

Bellingham also chipped in with three assists during Madrid's perfect group-stage campaign to strengthen his claim on the title of the world's best player right now.
