"European champions, we know what we are". That's the chant Manchester City fans were singing as soon as they had digested their Champions League final victory over Inter. The performance of Pep Guardiola's team may not have been the most convincing, but they achieved in Istanbul what the Catalan coach had repeatedly described as a dream.
City have been dreaming of winning the Champions League since the 2008 takeover by the Abu Dhabi United group, and even more so since Guardiola became the club's coach in 2016. It has taken 15 years and over £2 billion of investment, but City are finally what they long wanted to be and what they thought they should be: unquestionably the best team in Europe.
Saturday's victory not only took the Champions League out of City's hands, it also made them only the second English team to complete a treble of Europe's biggest prize - the Premier League title and the FA Cup. The treble was Manchester United's pride and joy, but now City have matched it.
