Maryland kicks off its 2025 campaign on Saturday at the SECU Stadium, squaring off against Florida Atlantic in a noon kickoff that will air on BTN and the Maryland Sports Radio Network.
The Terrapins are coming off a disappointing 4-8 season, which included a 1-8 mark in Big Ten play, leaving them 17th in the conference standings, ahead only of the winless Purdue. Maryland actually opened with some promise at 4-3, but a brutal five-game skid to close the year left them limping into the offseason.
Florida Atlantic didn’t fare much better in 2024 either, finishing 3-9 overall and 1-7 in the AAC, tying with Tulsa for 13th place. Like Maryland, the Owls stumbled down the stretch, after a 2-3 start, a six-game losing streak torpedoed any hopes of salvaging the season.

For Maryland, the biggest storyline is at quarterback, where true freshman Malik Washington is making a strong push to unseat Justyn Martin and Khristian Martin for the starting quarterback position. At tight end, Georgia State transfer Dorian Fleming brings versatility and another option in the passing attack. The offensive line returns only two starters and must absorb transfer reinforcements like Rahtrel Perry (Central Connecticut) and Isaiah Wright (Buffalo) to maintain stability in both protection and the ground game.
Defensively, the Terps turn the page with new coordinator Ted Monachino, whose NFL pedigree could inject some much-needed discipline and creativity into a unit that ranked near the bottom of the conference in both sacks and scoring defense last season. Linebacker Daniel Wingate and safety Jalen Huskey provide veteran leadership, while transfers Dontay Joyner (Arkansas State) and Jamare Glasker (Wake Forest) strengthen the secondary. The defensive line remains largely unproven, but if young talents like Trey Reddick and Neeo Avery develop quickly, Maryland could take a major step forward on that side of the ball.

Sophomore tackle Vincent Forney has the tools to develop into a standout, but Florida Atlantic’s offensive line will be thrown straight into the fire against rugged Big Ten defenses. In the backfield, redshirt sophomores Xavier Terrell and Gemari Sands are set to split the workload. Both backs bring flashes of ability, yet neither has consistently proven they can grind out tough yards against top-tier competition. If the front five can keep the pocket clean and open lanes, the Owls’ offense has the potential to surprise, but early matchups like this will show whether the scheme can hold up under pressure.
On the defensive side, FAU enters a clear rebuild. Nickelback Wendol Philord is the lone returning starter and the steadying presence in an otherwise unsettled group. Around him, the depth chart leans heavily on transfers and untested pieces. CJ Doggette Jr. (Ohio) and Leon Hart Jr. (Marshall) are expected to step in right away, but the inexperience across the board, particularly at linebacker, leaves questions about consistency. The Owls struggled to collapse the pocket last year, and without a stronger pass rush, their secondary could be picked apart early in the season. Special teams may prove to be their safety valve, with punter Logan Lupo and kicker Garrison Smith providing a reliable edge in field position battles.
