Deportivo Alaves will be aiming to build on signs of progress when they welcome an out-of-sorts Atletico Madrid to Mendizorroza this week.
The Basque side flirted with relegation for much of last season, but under Claudio Giraldez, they eventually found enough to stay afloat. With the summer overhaul, expectations are that Alavés will not only pick up results but also show a more polished, attacking style. Their season began on a positive note with a dramatic 2-1 stoppage-time victory over newly-promoted Levante, though they couldn’t follow it up, slipping to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Real Betis at La Cartuja.
For Atlético, the story is far less encouraging. Despite another hefty summer budget placed in Diego Simeone’s hands, Los Rojiblancos continue to look sluggish and uninspired. Their campaign kicked off with a 2-1 loss away at Espanyol, and last weekend they could only muster a 1-1 draw at home against an energetic Elche side, leaving supporters frustrated at yet another slow start.

Team news & squads
Deportivo Alaves team news
Team news is more straightforward for the hosts, as Alavés are expected to field the same XI as last weekend. There are no new fitness or disciplinary issues to worry about, though Hugo Novoa remains a slight question mark.
Atletico Madrid team news
Atlético, on the other hand, have headaches of their own. New signing Alex Baena is nursing a knock and could miss out, while defensive linchpin Jose María Gimenez is also a doubt, adding to Simeone’s early-season concerns.
