Brazil Claim Narrow Victory Against Determined Estonia

Estonia 0-1 Brazil

Brazil beat Estonia 1-0 in a rough encounter played at the La Coq Arena in Tallinn, Estonia, on Wednesday.

The five-time world champions couldn't find their feet during the match and only managed a narrow victory courtesy of a Luis Fabiano strike in the first half.

Estonia, who were commemorating the centenary of the nation's football federation, were determined to cause a major upset and although they often had to resort to violence, they escaped with a narrow loss.

It was Brazil's first match since winning the Confederations Cup, and the Selecao looked sluggish. This was mainly due to the fact that most of their players hadn't played a competitive match in some time.

Real Madrid superstar, Kaka, struggled to get into the game, and this was obviously because he lacked match fitness, after having only featured in two games with his new club before the match.

The Europeans, ranked 112th in the world, looked dangerous when moving to the attack, and twice came close to scoring through Konstantin Vassiljev.

Dunga's side went ahead three minutes before the half-time break, when Sevilla striker Luis Fabiano took advantage of a lapse of concentration from the Estonia defence with a calm finish.

Three minutes into the second period Felipe Melo had a great opportunity to double Brazil's lead, but he failed to convert with the goal at his mercy.

Estonia, who noticeably lacked quality in their attack, absorbed heavy pressure from the visitors, but did well to close them down as soon as they reached the area.

Dunga made a number of changes to the side during the half, giving Atletico Mineiro striker Diego Tardelli his first cap with the national team.

The match looked nothing like a friendly, as both teams were determined to win. Brazil proved superior to their opponents, but the locals provoked them with dangerous tackles.

In the dying minutes of the match Brazil should have been awarded a penalty kick when Nilmar was brought down in the area, but match referee Martin Ingvarsson waved play on.

Brazil weren't close to their best, but would be happy about the fact that they managed to win their tenth game out of eleven this year.
