  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Bees director of football Phil Giles has insisted the club are waiting for the right offer for their talisman and could keep him next season if this does not come in from United or Tottenham Hotspur - despite the fact that Mbeumo only has one year left on his deal, and doing so could risk Brentford losing him for free in summer 2026.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mbeumo has previously expressed his desire to join the Red Devils above the chance to join up with former boss Thomas Frank at Spurs. It is unlikely that he would wish to remain at the Gtech Community Stadium for another year, particularly after club-legend manager Frank departed for North London. Mbeumo scored 20 Premier League goals last season to rank fourth in the Premier League's goalscoring charts and is looking to take the next step in his career.

  • WHAT GILES SAID

Giles told BBC Sport: "He had a fantastic season. We expected big interest in him, we have had big interest in him. He has his ideas about where he wants to take his career. He is well within his rights to do that.

"It is not impossible he is still a Brentford player next season if we agree he is going to stay. Any club will tell you that," he added. "If it's not right deal, why would we do it? He is certainly one of our best players, if not our best player, and we need our best players. There's no harm in keeping your best players."

WHAT NEXT FOR MBEUMO AND BRENTFORD?

United are expected to return with an improved third offer for the Cameroon international, after seeing two bids rejected. The Red Devils will be hopeful that a deal can be done for Mbeumo. If he does make the move to Old Trafford, there will be a huge amount of pressure on Brentford using the money wisely in the transfer market.
