The second full week of the NFL preseason rolls on as the Minnesota Vikings welcome the New England Patriots, with both sides riding the momentum of opening-week wins — though New England's came with a far heavier dose of dominance.

Minnesota's preseason opener was less flashy but equally effective, earning a 20-10 victory over the Houston Texans. It's a new era in Foxborough, with Mike Vrabel taking the reins in his first season as Patriots head coach.

Minnesota Vikings vs New England Patriots team news

Minnesota Vikings team news

Rookie J.J. McCarthy, making his first appearance after missing all of 2024 with an injury, completed 4-of-7 passes for 30 yards and added eight yards on the ground. Undrafted quarterback Max Brosmer mirrored those numbers with 30 passing yards and a touchdown, while Sam Howell was sharp, hitting 11 of 13 passes for 105 yards. The Vikings’ rushing attack sputtered to just 86 yards on 30 carries, but suspended wideout Jordan Addison — who will miss the first three regular-season games — still found a way to lead the team with three grabs for 33 yards.

Minnesota ultimately won the yardage battle 261-194 and forced Houston into three turnovers while only coughing it up once themselves — a clean, controlled performance that will be put to the test against a Patriots team brimming with early swagger.

New England Patriots team news

After serving on the Cleveland Browns’ staff last year, Vrabel’s résumé includes a successful run with the Tennessee Titans from 2018 to 2023, where he compiled a 54-45 regular-season record and went 2-3 in the playoffs. Now, all eyes are on whether he can steer New England toward a winning campaign.

If Week 1 was any indication, the Patriots are wasting no time making a statement. They dismantled the Washington Commanders 48-18 in what was arguably the most emphatic victory of the preseason so far. New England jumped out to a commanding 27-3 halftime advantage and never eased off the gas. Rookie starter Drake Maye went 3-of-5 for 12 yards through the air while tacking on 16 rushing yards and a touchdown.

First-year signal-caller Ben Wooldridge impressed in relief, going 9-for-12 for 132 yards, and veteran Joshua Dobbs chipped in 45 passing yards. The ground game was relentless, piling up 153 yards on 31 attempts with four trips to the end zone. Undrafted rookie Efron Chism III led the receiving effort with six catches for 50 yards and a score.
