The hosts just defeated New York City FC 2-1 in Major League Soccer action at the same location last week. The winning goals came from Jose Martinez and Chris Donovan in each half, while Andres Jasson gave New York a late consolation.

While this was going on, Tijuana also defeated Cruz Azul at home in Liga MX by the same score. But they had to go about it the difficult way. Ignacio Rivero gave the visitors the lead right before halftime, and Carlos Gonzalez tied things up in the 58th minute. The hosts completed the comeback with an own goal in stoppage time from Diber Cambindo.

As they prepare for their Leagues Cup debut, they now turn their focus to the continent. The third team in Group 12 is Queretaro.
